Over the past three weeks, the Austin Police Department (APD) has intensified efforts to address impaired driving in downtown Austin. As part of this initiative, Drug Recognition Expert Officers have been deployed on Friday and Saturday nights, focusing on keeping our streets safe by targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
During these nights of increased enforcement, those officers made 11 DWI arrests, tested 21 drivers for impairment who were not arrested, issued 61 warnings to drivers exhibiting unsafe or erratic behaviors, and handed out 11 citations for various traffic violations related to impaired driving.
Below are some key statistics from APD’s operation over the past three weeks:
- Nights of Operation: 6
- DWI Arrests: 11
- Drivers Tested (No Arrest): 21
- Warnings Given: 61
- Citations Issued: 11
APD’s priority is to protect the community. Every impaired driver that officers catch is one less potential danger on the road. APD wants to remind the community that driving under the influence is not only illegal, but reckless and unacceptable. APD would like to encourage everyone to make responsible decisions and use alternatives like ride-sharing services or designated drivers when drinking.
