The Austin Police Department (APD) has completed its inaugural annual review of the Sex Crimes Unit’s (SCU) sexual assault cases. Due to recommendations from the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), Austin Police Department Review, Reported Sexual Assault Comprehensive Evaluation, the review was conducted and implemented via the Collective Sex Crimes Response Model (CSCRM) Project.
The initial review focused on a sample of cases closed between 2021 and 2022 and a large portion of the review involved establishing a standardized methodology and tools to streamline future reviews, ensuring efficiency, consistency, and effectiveness in the coming years.
The primary goal of the annual case review is to continuously improve the quality of service, professionalism, victim sensitivity, and investigative thoroughness within the APD's SCU. By understanding current practices and identifying areas for improvement, the department can enhance its response to sexual assault cases year after year.
The case review is not an audit or a list of recommended findings, but rather a tool that provides a clear understanding and inventory of our response and investigative actions on sexual assault cases. As there is a delay between case closure and the review process, the full impact of implemented changes may not be immediately apparent.
We remain committed to providing compassionate and just services to survivors of sexual assault. We acknowledge the trust placed in us by the community and are dedicated to upholding that trust through continuous improvement.
