The Development Services Department (DSD) Entertainment Services Division is continuing to lead the buildout of the Safer Sixth Street Initiative, first crafted by Council in 2021. The initiative is an interdepartmental collaboration intended to complement policing by taking a comprehensive approach to nightlife district planning, management, and safety through organization of public spaces, diversity of uses and facilitate ongoing discussions and planning with bar operators to enhance safety and establish operating standards, in which APD participates. Any specific updates regarding the Safer Sixth Street Initiative will need to be handled by DSD.
What APD can say, is that we take all crimes that occur in our City seriously and we continue to look for ways to make our community safe for all. Unfortunately, the incident that occurred on Saturday, December 16th, was one that was not preventable. However, our response time to this incident was exceptional. APD was notified about the incident at 11:52 p.m., and the first officer arrived on scene within a minute of notification.
As we collectively look at ways to improve safety in the Sixth Street area, tackling the goals mentioned in the Safer Sixth Street Initiative are key components. In addition, here are other efforts APD is working on to keep Sixth Street safe:
- We are in the process of obtaining more light trailers to enhance safety and visibility in areas of concern.
- We are continuing to work with stakeholders on a potential environmental redesign for areas of Brazos Street.
- The current DTAC Initiative Shift is providing more officers to the area and allowing them to focus on crime trends and public concerns.
- Requests have been made and various avenues are being pursued for the potential purchase of new vehicle safety barriers for increased pedestrian safety.
A few things to always keep in mind when going out:
- Always remain vigilant
- If you see something, say something immediately
- Always try to stay in a group, if you lose your group identify a safe meeting location
- Be aware of your exit plan at the establishments you are visiting
- Never take a drink, leave your drink unattended or take anything from a stranger
- Make a plan to get home safely
- If you become a victim, get to a safe location and call 911 immediately
