On Friday, December 13, 2024, the Austin Police Department (APD) Robbery Unit, Organized Crime Division, SWAT, North Metro Tactical Unit, and Crime Analysis Unit conducted an operation targeting jugging style crime suspects. Officers and Detectives utilized information gathered by the crime analysis unit to determine locations frequently targeted by jugging suspects over the last few months. Within ten minutes of being present in the parking lot of the banking institution, undercover officers spotted a vehicle fitting the modus operandi of known jugging crime suspects. The suspect vehicle was identified as a Toyota pickup truck.
The suspect vehicle left the banking institution, following what appeared to be a potential victim vehicle. Several minutes later, both the suspect vehicle and the victim vehicle were seen pulling into the parking lot of 11300 North Lamar Boulevard.
The suspect vehicle immediately parked next to the victim vehicle. After the occupant of the victim vehicle went to the other side of the parking lot to assist a co-worker, a suspect exited the Toyota. He then unlawfully entered the victim’s vehicle, retrieving an envelope that was in plain view. The suspect got back into their vehicle, and at this time, officers conducted a traffic stop.
The suspects were in possession of an envelope containing $8,000 in cash, along with the victim’s personal bank card and ID card. Both suspects, later identified as Brandon Lee Wright and Marquise Keyon Collins, were arrested and charged for Felony Theft, due to the amount that was stolen. The victim’s money was returned to them.
The Austin Police Department would like to remind the community to be very aware when withdrawing and traveling with large amounts of cash, especially during the holidays. It is recommended that citizens avoid leaving large amounts of cash in their unattended vehicle, or try to avoid carrying large amounts of cash altogether.
APD would also like for this to be a warning to suspects coming into Austin with the intentions of committing jugging style crimes. The Austin Police Department routinely conducts these types of operations and ensures they are fully investigated. APD will not tolerate people taking advantage of our citizens, especially during the holidays, and anyone suspected of these crimes will be arrested and referred for prosecution.
