Suspect (deceased): Ensel Maclare-Urgelles, Hispanic male, 07/01/1975
The Austin Police Department (APD) is investigating the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Monday, May 27, 2024, at 12501 Tech Ridge Boulevard.
At approximately 1:34 a.m., Austin 9-1-1 received a call of a Disturbance/Hot Shot in the 12500 block of Tech Ridge Boulevard. The caller advised they could hear neighbors in a nearby apartment arguing, glass shattering, and things being thrown. The caller also advised it sounded like a disturbance between a male and a female and that the disturbance had been going on for approximately 10 minutes.
An additional 9-1-1 call was received with the caller stating they could hear yelling, screaming, banging, and calls for help. The caller stated they could hear a female screaming for help, a male yelling, and that the disturbance had moved onto the patio and back inside the residence.
At approximately 1:45 a.m., the first APD officer arrived on scene.
After arriving on scene, APD officers were flagged down by a female who directed officers towards the apartment where the disturbance was taking place.
At approximately 1:48 a.m., APD officers heard a disturbance coming from the apartment. APD officers knocked and announced Austin Police in English and Spanish but did not receive a response. Due to the exigency to preserve life and prevent further harm to any individuals inside, the APD officers forced entry through the apartment’s front door.
Once inside, APD officers located another closed door. Officers forced entry into that door. After entering, APD officers observed a male suspect, later identified as Ensel Maclare-Urgelles, on top of a female as the suspect was actively stabbing her with a knife. To protect the life of the victim, an APD officer discharged their department-approved firearm, striking Mr. Maclare-Urgelles.
At approximately 1:49 a.m., “shots fired” was announced over police radio traffic.
The female was removed from the residence, and APD officers began rendering life saving measures. APD officers also began rendering life saving measures on Mr. Maclare-Urgelles.
At approximately 1:54 a.m., Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (A/TCEMS) entered the scene and provided medical attention to the female victim who had sustained multiple stab wounds and the male suspect who was shot.
At approximately 2:01 a.m., Austin-Travis County EMS transported the victim and Mr. Maclare-Urgelles to local hospitals. The victim sustained life-threatening injuries, but is currently in stable condition. Mr. Maclare-Urgelles was pronounced deceased at 3:05 a.m. No other persons and no officers were injured during this incident.
The incident was captured on the officers’ body-worn cameras. Per APD policy, APD video relating to this incident will be released within 10 business days. The officer that discharged their firearm, has six years of service. Per APD protocol, the officer will be placed on administrative duty.
APD is conducting two concurrent investigations into this incident: a criminal investigation conducted by the APD Special Investigations Unit in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney's Office and an administrative investigation conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, with oversight from the Office of Police Oversight.
