The Austin Police Department (APD) is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a suspect vehicle in connection to a Fail and Stop to Render Aid crash that occurred on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at approximately 12:52 a.m.
The suspect vehicle, described and shown on the attached video link, hit a pedestrian before leaving the scene without stopping to render aid or calling 9-1-1. The pedestrian, later identified as Dustin A. Hughes, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The suspect vehicle is described as:
- Four-door pickup truck
- White in color
- Large black toolbox in the bed of the pickup truck
- Amber colored lights on the sideview mirrors
- Possible damage to the front of the vehicle as a result of the crash

On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at approximately 12:52 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian in the 1000 block of W William Cannon Drive. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The vehicle did not stop and left the scene.
This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 46th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 49 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2023, 55 fatal crashes resulted in 58 fatalities.
These statements are from the initial assessment of the fatal crash, and the investigation is still pending. Fatality information may change.
