Small Business Guide to HR (In person & Virtual)

Understanding human resources is essential for small business and nonprofit professionals, whether you're hiring your first employee, working with contractors, or growing a team. This updated version of our Basics of HR class offers a practical, approachable look at key employment laws, recruiting and hiring best practices, and compliance with state and federal regulations. We’ll cover what you need to know—without unnecessary complexity—so you can confidently manage growth, while staying compliant. Whether you're planning to expand or just want to understand your responsibilities, this class provides valuable insights to help you navigate HR with ease.

Participants will also get a free toolkit – a collection of templates, forms, worksheets, software and other helpful resources to help make good use of the information shared in class.

This class is eligible for 1 credit toward the city's Skills Certificate programs. Participants who complete six eligible courses in the program are recognized in a public awards ceremony with other local business and community leaders. Where is the Small Business Training Room?
The Economic Development Dept. is located at 5202 E. Ben White Blvd. Suite 300, Austin, Texas. The easiest way to access the Small Business Training Room for this class is to park on the Southeast side of the building in the large parking lot. (lower right in the image below) Then enter the building through Suite 300. The classroom is right there.
