Process and ReProcess

Visual Artists in Residence Exhibition
December 23, 2023 – January 27, 2024

“Process and ReProcess” is the cumulative exhibition of the Dougherty Arts Center’s visual artists in residence Chelsea Biggerstaff, Gabriella Blasquez, Veronica Christianson, and Ali Rex. The Visual Artist Residency Program provides artists with facilities and professional interactions to develop their ideas, skills, and focus as practicing artists. This exhibit displays the resident’s talent, craftsmanship, and commitment to their practice throughout their residency and beyond.

Chelsea Biggerstaff explores emotion, memory, and inherited traumas through intricately crafted masks and altars. Her work serves as a testament to the human spirit's capacity for resilience, compassion, and growth.

Gabriella Blasquez uses slip casting and handbuilding techniques to create porcelain sculptures that investigate the simultaneous strength and fragility of the connections we form. Her work examines how we contort our sense of self in the pursuit of communion.

Veronica Christianson creates pinched, texture-focused forms that reflect the intimacy of her slow and thoughtful work with clay. Her functional pieces act as a commemoration of everyday moments and rituals.

Ali Rex responds to endometriosis through anatomical models of pain and emotion. Her sculptures serve as visual aids for connecting with others who can relate to the personal and often isolating moments of unseen physical pain, while expressing what it feels like to those who can’t.
