On January 31, 2022 the OPO received an online complaint.
The complainant alleges: I was followed by one of your patrol cars after an officer ran my plates
for no reason at an intersection on
After passing the
and
intersection, I noticed the officer was still following me after three intersections and began
to become suspicious. He followed me INTO my neighborhood and after a stop he pulled me over
claiming that I hadn't stopped properly - behind the white line. He informed me that it is
important to stop well due to children being around at this hour and in this neighborhood. I didn't
see a single kid, SO I was like alright. He took my license while I sat in the car talking to his partner.
After a while he asked me if I knew who
was (which I do not) and then proceeded
to tell me that my plates were faulty. He actually said that he had ran my plates and that's why he
stayed behind me. Then he asked if I had ever installed lights on my car and asked when I had
gotten my car. Literally a waste of my time. He then let me off with a verbal warning and gave me
instructions on how to stop properly. I didn't get either of their names, but the one who stopped
me was a white male and his partner was a latino male. I am a latina myself and drive a nissan
altima. I can't think of anything else but this being profiling. The officer literally followed me until
he had a reason to stop me. This officer had no business following me regardless of being a
possibly "suspicious" vehicle or suspect - that's not right. Running my plates then finding a
minor reason to stop me is absolute bullshit. Stop doing this, it's absolutely devastating.
This notice of complaint is a request for Internal Affairs to initiate an investigation to determine
if the employee conduct is within compliance of APD policy, Civil Service Rules, and Municipal
Civil Service Rules.
