The Technology Commission advises the city council on community technology, telecommunications services, new sources of funding for access television projects, new sources of funding for community technology projects, allocation of annual financial support and evaluation of the performance of franchise holders, access television contractors, and other community technology contractors, including development of criteria to be used for evaluations. It promotes access to telecommunications services and community technologies. See Section 2-1-107 of the City Code for additional duties.

Ordinance 20250130-082 changed the Commission's name from the Community Technology and Telecommunications Commission, and expanded the Commission's purposes and duties by:

  1. Promoting public access to the internet
  2. Developing methodologies for promoting public access to telecommunications services, community technologies, and the internet
  3. Expanding support of the City's Grant for Technology Opportunities Program

Per ordinance 20141211-204, the board was formerly known as the Austin Community Technology and Telecommunications Commission; the name was changed to Community Technology and Telecommunications Commission.
