Protect Austin's Future with Sustainable Transportation

earth day

Each year, Earth Day invites us to stop and reflect on the impact we have on our planet’s health. Transportation is perhaps one of the biggest forces behind the impact, particularly when it comes to carbon emissions and air quality. So when we take a moment to look at what we can do to better protect our planet’s future, the easiest place to start is by looking at how we are choosing to get from A to B.

Renewable Energy

With the growing market for electric vehicles, choosing green has never been more accessible. Electric vehicles can offer a smooth and stable drive while reducing your carbon footprint. Switching to electric could even pay off in more ways than one! Federal rebates up to $7,500 are available when you purchase new or used electric cars and trucks.  If you’ve been thinking about biking on your regular work commute, consider an E-bike. Austin Energy offers rebates up to $1,300 to its customers for eligible electric bikes, scooters, mopeds and motorcycles.

Walk, Bike, Ride or Share

Austin is full of transportation resources that are sustainable, affordable and convenient. Skip the hassle of parking and enjoy reading a book when you ride the bus or train to your work meeting downtown. Take the scenic route when you ride your bike to meet a friend by cutting through one of Austin’s Urban Trails. Get to know your coworkers and see if anyone who lives near you wants to carpool to work. Choosing any of these options not only helps us reduce carbon emissions, but it can also help us reduce congestion on the road. We’ll call that a win-win!

The City of Austin is committed to reaching net zero community-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or earlier. By opting for alternative methods of commuting when we can, we can all work towards a healthier and less traffic-congested Austin.

Happy Earth Day!
