Old Bakery and Artisan Emporium Mural

The City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department partnered with the Downtown Austin Alliance and Austin Parks Foundation to add a new mural on the south-facing wall of the Old Bakery and Artisan Emporium, initiating a shift towards more programming and activities in the public plaza.

Named "Generational Ties," the mural is a testament to the area's rich cultural tapestry. Created by local Austin-born artist Ruben Esquivel, who recently was voted Austin Chronicle’s Best Muralist 2024, the artwork beautifully intertwines the Indigenous heritage of Austin with the Swedish roots of the Old Bakery and Emporium.

The mural's design prominently features two native women whose braids intertwine, symbolizing the transmission of wisdom and beauty across generations. Adorned with flora, fauna, and the Swedish national flower, the giktgräs, along with hummingbirds – a symbol of love, joy, and rebirth – the artwork blends these diverse cultural elements seamlessly. A protective swallow and a background featuring traditional Swedish textile patterns further enrich the symbolism, celebrating the cultural fusion.

Located at the historic northwest corner of Congress Avenue and 10th Street in downtown Austin, the Old Bakery and Artisan Emporium offers a unique experience. Come browse handmade items from local artisans and artworks by artists aged 50 and above. Additionally, the Visitor Center, housing the Lundberg-Maerki Historical Collection, narrates Austin's Swedish immigrant history.
