Program Importance
Each year in Austin and Travis County, approximately 600 people experience cardiac arrest and are treated by the Austin/Travis County EMS system. In 2011, despite only 48 percent receiving bystander CPR, 72 lives were saved.
“The most definitive thing we can do as a community to improve survival is to have more citizens willing and able to provide bystander CPR,” said Dr. Paul Hinchey, Medical Director. “We will take this opportunity to carry our message out to the community and let everyone know: You need to act, you can do no harm and you can save a life.”
Since launching TAKE10 in 2011, the City of Austin’s program has been used as a model for other cities, such as Suffolk County, New York; Howard County, Maryland; and Washington County, Texas.
