AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is proud to announce a new partnership with Viva Aerobus, introducing nonstop service to Monterrey, Mexico. The inaugural flight departed on March 22, 2024, marking a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity between Central Texas and Mexico. Having previously served AUS passengers with nonstop service to Mexico between 2008 to 2009, Viva Aerobus again joins AUS as the airport’s 19th airline carrier.
Since announcing the partnership in September 2023, AUS and Viva Aerobus have worked together to introduce this new service, recognizing the growing demand for convenient travel options between Austin and Monterrey. As a Mexico-based ultra-low-cost carrier, Viva Aerobus is committed to providing affordable and accessible air travel for passengers. The new route will operate four days a week, offering travelers seamless access to Monterrey International Airport (MTY) from Austin. Monterrey serves as a pivotal destination in Mexico, boasting strong business ties, vibrant tourism attractions, and important family connections within Texas, serving both leisure and business travelers alike.
Monterrey, located in the neighboring Mexican state of Nuevo León, is a treasure trove of history, stunning landscapes, and authentic regional cuisine. Its proximity to Texas makes it an accessible destination for exploring Mexico's rich culture. From the majestic Sierra Madre Oriental to the bustling city of Monterrey, visitors can immerse themselves in both natural beauty and urban vibrancy. Business and major university connections flourish here, complemented by a thriving industrial sector and entrepreneurial spirit. Additionally, Monterrey serves as a strategic hub connecting passengers to various other popular destinations across Mexico.
A launch celebration was held at the airport to commemorate the nonstop route launch. There were refreshments, giveaways, a mariachi trio and remarks from City and airport officials, airport partners and the Austin Consul General of Mexico.
"We are thrilled to launch nonstop service to Monterrey in partnership with Viva Aerobus," said Ghizlane Badawi, Interim CEO of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. "This new route underscores our commitment to expanding international nonstop flight options for our passengers while fostering economic and cultural connections between Texas and our neighboring country, Mexico."
Echoing these sentiments, the Consul General of Mexico, Pablo Marentes, expressed, "This nonstop flight is a significant milestone in fostering enhanced economic, academic, and technological exchanges between Mexico and the United States. As Consul General of Mexico, I commend this initiative as it bolsters not only business opportunities, but also facilitates greater connectivity for our communities. This nonstop route underscores the importance of strengthening transportation infrastructure to promote tourism, trade, and cultural understanding and reinforcing the enduring partnership between Monterrey and Austin.”
The route will be serviced by the airline’s family of Airbus A320 aircraft, which boasts the largest single-aisle cabin in the skies, giving passengers more space, wider seats and larger overhead compartments.
“This new nonstop service is part of our ongoing expansion strategy in the US. We are aiming to make travel between our countries easier and faster than ever. We know there’s a huge opportunity to increase tourism, trade, and business opportunities between our two cities, while also connecting our communities and culture,” said Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO of Viva Aerobus. “When arriving in Monterrey, travelers from the US will also be able to enjoy direct connections to more than 10 of the most important cities in Mexico. We encourage you to take advantage of our low fares, modern fleet and unmatched service to experience the beauty and charm of our cities.”
Passengers can now book their flights to Monterrey, Mexico, through Viva Aerobus, and experience the convenience of direct travel between Austin and one of Mexico's most dynamic cities.
With the rising demand for international travel in Central Texas, AUS has begun an enhancement project for its International Arrivals facility. Currently in the design phase, the project aims to add baggage carousels and expand passenger processing areas, enhancing the overall experience for inbound international travelers. These enhancements align with the airport's commitment to delivering short-term improvements to the Barbara Jordan terminal as part of the Journey With AUS program.
