Offering free site assessments and flexible low-interest cleanup loans
Some of Austin's landmark attractions were once brownfields. Walk around the lake in the Mueller neighborhood, eat a restaurant in the Seaholm Eco District, or buy produce at a farmers market at Plaza Saltillo and you'll see the results of brownfields redevelopment.
If you've gone to a concert at Zilker Park, taken the train from Crestview Station, or visited our new Central Library, then you've enjoyed the benefits of brownfields revitalization in Austin.
What are brownfields?
Are you acquiring property? Could the property have environmental concerns from previous use? Does your banker want an environmental assessment before talking about financing? A “yes” means this could be a brownfield.
Brownfields can include land or buildings containing asbestos, mold or other pollutants. Gas stations, dry cleaners, unofficial 'dumps,' and former industrial and commercial operations like warehouses, auto repair shops and landfills which could have caused unseen contamination.
The Brownfields Revitalization Office supports redeveloping properties by providing free site assessments and technical assistance to relieve environmental concerns.

Montopolis Recreation Center
The Montopolis Recreation Center, a cornerstone of the East Austin community for more than four decades, is being redeveloped into a beautiful new recreation and community center. Before demolition of the old facility begins, asbestos found in the wall and ceiling materials must be removed. Austin Brownfields is helping to finance the asbestos abatement with EPA cleanup funding. Get more information and project updates.
