Sustainability Initiative
Austin Facilities Management is committed to long term sustainability practices and has implemented initiatives to reduce our environmental impact.
We are Green Seal Certified, which requires specific green-initiative standards in cleaning products, training programs, and recycling procedures. We purchase environmentally preferable materials, services, alternate fuel vehicles, & energy and water-efficient products.
AFM currently monitors energy usage and consumption in numerous city facilities through Energy Star Portfolio and Energy Management software. Our practices will continue to reflect fiscal responsibility, social equity, environmental stewardship and community.
About AFM's Director
Darrell Alexander is an accomplished professional renowned for his distinguished career in facility management and public administration. Appointed as the Director of Austin Facilities Management for the City of Austin on June 8, 2020, he brings a profound strategic vision aimed at maintaining the organization's leadership in energy management, sustainability, and streamlined facility operations. Prior to his role with the City of Austin, Mr. Alexander held various influential positions at Sodexo Inc. since 2012, most recently providing leadership and guidance in facility management operations for multiple universities across the United States. This encompassed overseeing more than 11 million square feet, 327 facilities, and a workforce of 524 employees.
Before his tenure at Sodexo Inc., Mr. Alexander spent several years with Kellogg, Brown, and Root (KBR) Government Operations as a Deputy Project Manager, where he played a pivotal role in providing Base Life Support to over a dozen military bases in the Middle East. Notably, he was instrumental in the successful logistical planning and execution of moving KBR personnel and property out of Iraq. Additionally, he managed the final phase of 12 site mergers with a budget exceeding $800 million. Mr. Alexander is a retired military professional and holds various certifications, including Military Advanced Leadership and Management, Program Budgeting and Execution, Mastering Project Management, and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt. He earned a Master of Public Administration from Norwich University and a Bachelor of Business Administration from St. Edward’s University.
