A response is the dispatch of one unit to a request for assistance (i.e., an incident).  In cases like major traffic collisions, a single incident may result in multiple responses.  This is a primary measure of system workload.  This definition includes regularly scheduled ATCEMS ambulances, and excludes pre-planned activities such as standbys at special events like South by Southwest or the Austin Marathon.

Why Is This Important?

This is a basic measure of how busy we are. We track responses in order to monitor unit activity, which translates to crew workload. This information, along with other data, is used to make sure we have enough units available to meet current needs and to project future resource needs.

Responses by City Units into County

Our EMS system is jointly funded by the City of Austin and Travis County. Units are stationed in the city and county areas relative to funding levels provided by these governments, but we operate as a single system, with the closest available unit dispatched to an incident regardless of where it is stationed. One of our goals is to balance resource utilization as best we can; this is one of two charts that measures that balance.
