The Austin-Travis County Emergency Operations Center (ATCEOC) remains activated in response to the cold winter weather snap. Critical updates will be posted online at austintexas.gov/alerts in 14 languages.
With Thursday’s precipitation limited to rain and temperatures forecasted above 35 degrees throughout the day on Friday, Jan. 10, Cold Weather Shelter (CWS) operations will resume normal operations for overnight shelter only. Shelters will be cleared Friday morning to allow cleaning crews to prepare the facilities for their normal daytime activities before overnight shelter operations resume in the evening.
Registration for the overnight shelter on Friday will occur between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at One Texas Center (OTC), 505 Barton Springs Rd. This will act as the central embarkation point for individuals seeking overnight shelter. For additional information, call the Cold Weather Shelter Hotline at 512-972-5055.
The City sheltered 340 individuals overnight Wednesday. Of those individuals, 229 chose to remain in the shelters during the day Thursday for the 24-hour shelter activation.
Those seeking a temporary reprieve from the winter weather conditions can access Warming Centers during normal operating hours. Additionally, Terrazas Branch Library will open one hour early on Friday, Jan. 10 at 8 a.m., and on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 8 a.m. to noon. Service animals are permitted in City facilities.
The City continues to ask all community members to take necessary actions to protect themselves and other household members, including pets, during this event. Information on preparing for, withstanding, and recovering from a variety of emergencies is available online at ReadyCentralTexas.org.
The public is reminded to NOT call 911 unless they are experiencing a medical or life-threatening emergency. If non-emergency services or assistance from the City are needed, Austinites can call 311. Keeping 911 lines clear for only emergencies will aid the City in properly dispatching first responders and emergency personnel to those who need help.
The public can sign up to receive emergency alerts via text, call and/or email at WarnCentralTexas.org.
