Outdoor Amplified Sound

The City of Austin requires a permit for ALL commercial and non-residential establishments that use sound equipment outdoors (in any space that is not fully enclosed by four solid walls and a roof). These permits are reviewed by the Development Services Department's Entertainment Services Group. Title 9, Chapter 9-2 of the Austin Code of Ordinances, regulates noise and amplified sound.

Which Permit Do I Need ...

Outdoor Music Venue (OMV) Permit

Outdoor amplified sound at commercial or non-residential establishments on a regular or recurring basis.

Temporary Use of Outdoor Sound Equipment Permit

Outdoor amplified sound at a commercial or non-residential establishment on a one-time basis for an activity that is consistent with the permanent legal use and occupancy level for the space OR at an event or activity for a gathering of less than 50 people in a space that is not consistent with the permanent legal use and/or occupancy level for the property.

Outdoor Amplified Sound at Special Events

Outdoor amplified sound at events for a gathering of more than 50 people in a space that is not consistent with the permanent legal use and/or occupancy level for the property. Approved through the special event permit. Application and more information are available on the Austin Center for Events (ACE) page.

Amplified Sound in Residential Areas

Property zoned as residential (under Section 25-2-32B) does not require, and is not eligible for an outdoor sound permit. Austin City Code allows amplified sound on residential property from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at a maximum of 75 decibels. Amplified sound may not be audible beyond the property line from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m.
