The City of Austin’s Fair Chance Hiring Ordinance supports equal employment opportunities by delaying when employers can ask about a candidate’s criminal history during the hiring process. The goal is to reduce recidivism, increase economic opportunity, and promote reintegration for individuals with criminal records.
This effort is led by the Office of Civil Rights, now part of the Office of Equity and Inclusion, which enforces civil rights protections and conducts outreach, training, and investigations related to employment discrimination, housing, and access to public services.
In November 2012, Austin voters approved Proposition 10 to establish for the first time a Municipal Civil Service system for most City employees that are not covered by state Civil Service law. Those City of Austin personnel under the state law include uniformed/non-civilian Emergency Medical Services, Fire and Police.

Application guide
Before you apply: Read the full job posting!
Once you find a job you're interested in, carefully read the entire job posting. It includes all the important details you'll need, such as:
- Minimum qualifications
- Preferred qualifications
- Duties, functions, and responsibilities
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Responsibilities - supervisor and/or leadership exercised
- Whether a criminal background check is required
- Notes to applicants
- Application questions
- Required documents, like a résumé or cover letter
- Opening and closing dates for the job posting
📅 Pay close attention to the closing date. Applications must be submitted before 11:59:59 p.m. on the DAY BEFORE listed closing date — late submissions will not be accepted.
- Click “Apply” at the top left of the job posting to begin your application.
- Save a copy of the job posting for reference. This will help you respond to questions about how you meet the minimum and preferred qualifications during the application process.
- Complete all required and optional fields accurately. When responding to open-ended questions, provide clear and thorough answers.
- You can click “Save to continue” at the bottom of the application at any time. Note: If you leave a page and return without saving, your progress on that page may be lost.
- Carefully review and acknowledge all required sections before proceeding.
- Once you've completed your application, a summary page titled “Review” will appear. Take time to assess your responses. Use the “Back” button to make any necessary updates.
- When you're ready, click “Submit.” The system will display a confirmation message: “Application Submitted” and note “You have no more tasks.”
- You may then return to your Workday home page, where you can view the status of your submitted application(s).
- Fully complete your Educational and Employment Records. Do not enter "See résumé"—this will result in an incomplete application and may disqualify you from consideration.
- Respond to all supplemental questions. In Workday, these will appear under the section titled “Application Questions.” Answer each question clearly and thoroughly to demonstrate your qualifications.
- Review document requirements carefully. Some positions may require a résumé and cover letter. Any required documents should be uploaded in the “Resume/CV” drag-and-drop area of the application.
- Be prepared to provide professional references. Personal references (e.g., friends or family members) will not be accepted.
- Supervisor and employment verification details may be required. Be ready to provide accurate contact information for previous supervisors or employers to support reference checks and employment verification.
- Ensure your application reflects a complete picture of your background. Core information provided—such as your work history, education, and responses to application questions—is reviewed by recruiters, HR staff, hiring authorities, panel interviewers, and senior leadership. These materials are a key part of every stage of the evaluation process, including offer development. Submitting a thorough and accurate application helps support your candidacy from start to finish.
