On Sunday, March 29, 2020 at approximately 2:37 a.m., Austin 911 received multiple calls of gunshots in the parking lot of 500 E. Highland Mall Boulevard. Austin Police, Fire, and Austin-Travis County EMS arrived on scene but no victims were located. Austin 911 then received a call from Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas advising that a Black male with a gunshot wound had been transported by friends from the scene to the hospital. Despite life saving measures performed by hospital personnel, the victim, identified as 24-year-old Kalvin Anderson, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 4:32 a.m. by Dr. Teixereira.
Homicide detectives and crime scene units arrived to process the scene. According to multiple witnesses that were interviewed, a verbal confrontation erupted between two groups that were staying at the motel. The verbal confrontation escalated into a physical fight that ended in the discharge of multiple weapons. Two women suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds. Both were treated at local hospitals and released. The suspects were only identified as black males.
The Travis County Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy today.
Several vehicles in the parking lot were damaged by gunfire. For those vehicle owners who could not be reached to authorize the processing of their vehicle at the scene, please contact the Homicide Unit to check on the status of your vehicle. At least four vehicles were towed to our forensic facility for processing.
