Dougherty Arts Center Redevelopment Project Community Meeting #2
Zilker Botanical Gardens
2220 Barton Springs Road
Austin, Texas 78746
Wednesday, September 19, 2018
5:00 pm – 7:30 pm
This meeting will showcase how the public’s feedback and the survey results from the first meeting were incorporated into the plans, and ask participants for additional thoughts on future possibilities for the Arts Center.
The Dougherty Arts Center (DAC) is one of Austin’s oldest community arts venues and has brought joy, entertainment, and education to its students and visitors for 40 years. The center is facing increased challenges such as lack of space, lack of technology resources, and missed opportunities to accommodate various activities. The facility is in a difficult position due to being built on top of a landfill and on land that has been designated as a 25-year floodplain, which has caused it to flood multiple times over the past 10 years. If the DAC were to be rehabilitated, the center would be shut down for 2 to 3 years during construction and the cost to repair the grounds and facility would exceed the cost to build a new center at another location.
