The fiscal year 2017 was a record year for Austin Water’s Reclaimed Water Program.
(Austin)— IGX Burleson Park, LLC became Austin Water’s 100th commercial customer to sign on to the reclaimed water program. IGX Burleson Park, LLC is the developer of Supply Court, a seven-building light industrial park located on Burleson Road in southeast Austin.
The industrial park, as a whole, is expected to have a projected total annual use of 1,600,000 gallons of water. The reclaimed water program, with its cost-saving benefits, will help save an estimated $5,000-7,000 in water usage fees.
“This is a win-win for Austin Water and commercial customers”, said Dan Pederson, Reclaim Water Program Manager at Austin Water. “Reclaimed water is less expensive to treat so Austin Water customers can pay as little as 60% less than the price of drinking water.”
Reclaimed water, with its cost-savings, is the best option to use for irrigation, industrial uses or virtually any other use that doesn’t require higher-quality drinking water. Users can see a tremendous reduction on their water bill.
About Austin Water’s Reclaimed Water Program
More than 50 miles of reclaimed water mains and water lines run in specially colored purple pipes beneath Austin streets--and that number is continuing to grow.
The City of Austin’s - Jimmy Clay Golf Course was the first commercial user of reclaimed water starting in 1974. As recently as 2000, five commercial customers had signed on to the program. The fiscal year 2017 was a record year for Austin Water’s Reclaimed Water Program with the completion of the Capitol Complex Reclaimed Water Main Project in downtown Austin. An additional 25 commercial customers also signed on to the reclaimed water program in 2017. Major customers include: the Google Building, Republic Square, Wooldridge Square, Travis County Courthouse, University of Texas, BAE Systems, HEB Mueller, Guerrero Park, and the Animal Shelter.
Reclaimed water meets over 90% of the criteria for drinking water and has passed all state laws for non-potable use. This water is clear with no odor and has been treated for virtually any use not requiring higher-quality drinking water. Such uses may include irrigation, cooling towers, industrial uses, toilet flushing and more. For more information about the Reclaimed Water Program, visit austintexas.gov/department/water-reclamation.
