FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Release Date: Jan. 15, 2021
Contact: Patricia Fraga, City Auditor’s Office     512-680-1012    Email

The random drawing will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 23 and will be broadcast and live streamed.

City Auditor Corrie Stokes will take the final step in her office’s responsibilities for the redistricting process to redraw City Council boundaries for the 2022 election. The Auditor will conduct a random drawing to select the first eight members for the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission.

The random drawing will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 23 and will be live streamed.

On October 1, 2020, the Auditor randomly selected the three-member Applicant Review Panel which selected the 60 most qualified applicants for the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission. Those members included: James Christianson, Abigael McClean, and William Cooper.

The panel finished their duties and have provided a list of the 60 most qualified applicants out of 270 applicants. The Auditor’s office will conduct a random drawing and select 8 Austin residents from the pool of 60.

Prior to the random drawing the Auditor will send the list of 60 applicants to the Mayor and City Council, each member will be allowed to strike up to one person from the list.

“I commend the excellent work of the Applicant Review Panel,” said City Auditor Corrie Stokes. “Not only did they select a list of applicants that represent the diversity of Austin, but they also provided an equal representation from each of the city’s 10 council districts.”

After the first eight are selected, those members will then conduct a process to select the remaining six. The 14-member Commission will redraw the boundaries of the 10 council districts.

About the Redistricting Process
City of Austin voters approved Proposition 3, a City Charter amendment commonly referred to as “10-1,” in November 2012.  This Charter amendment provides for the election of City Council Members from 10 geographic single-member districts, with the Mayor elected from the City at-large and began with the November 2014 election.

The amendment calls for the creation of a three-member Applicant Review Panel and a 14-member Citizens Redistricting Commission. The Commission will draw the boundaries for the City of Austin’s new Council election districts and the Panel will select the 60 most qualified applicants from the pool.

The redistricting process happens every ten years and coincides with the census.

As per the City Charter, the City Auditor is tasked with initiating and widely publicizing an application process and taking all reasonable and necessary steps to get a diverse pool of applicants.
