Congress Avenue is our community's main ceremonial street, connecting from the Capitol, across Lady Bird Lake, to Riverside Drive and beyond. It should be a distinctive place that people go to and linger, not just pass through.
Improving Congress Avenue as the ‘Main Street of Texas’ is called for in the Council adopted Downtown Austin Plan, and the project is made possible with funding from the City’s 2012 bond program. Through a partnership with Downtown Austin Alliance (DAA) and community stakeholders the project kicked off in early 2016. The City has contracted with an Urban Design consultant team that will help refine and realize the vision for the Congress Avenue from the Capitol to Riverside Drive.
Over the next nine months, outreach efforts will continue to gather input about the future development of Congress Avenue. Public events and focused meetings will allow stakeholders to participate as their interest allows and is designed to give every Austinite and Texan a voice in the process.

Our Congress Avenue Survey
We want to know how and when you use Congress Avenue, and what your vision is for its future.
Our Congress Avenue hosted Transform! – a fun interactive exploration of Congress Avenue’s past and present, and reimagining of what the beloved street could be in the future. The two-day event included walkabouts, story tours, design workshops, and a pop up park with food, games, and music for everyone.
The City of Austin, in partnership with the Downtown Austin Alliance, hosted two community meetings for the launch of the intiative. The public had an opportunity to learn about the project, speak to staff and consulting experts, explore the history of the avenue, provide thoughts and ideas, and hear about ways to stay involved.
