West Nile Watch

Aug 2, 2013 - 10:20 am

I was able to tag along and see the process from beginning to end of what it takes to collect data and study the virus. Collecting and discovering if a mosquito is a carrier of the West Nile Virus is a very tedious process.  West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne illness. Up to 80 percent of people infected with West Nile virus will have no symptoms and will recover on their own, however, some cases can cause serious illness or death. People over 50 and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of becoming ill if they become infected with the virus. To prevent this from happening  Austin-Travis County Health and Human Services, along with the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, work in stride to get on top of tracking the virus to help to protect the citizens of Austin and surrounding communities.  Producer: Jonathan Uhl
