The Austin Green Business Leaders program recently achieved its 2013 goal of recognizing more than 100 local companies for their sustainable business operations.
“Getting to 100 businesses is a reflection that local companies are committed to going green – not just for environmental reasons, but because it makes good business sense,” says Marc Coudert, Program Coordinator for Austin Green Business Leaders.
Launched in April of 2012 by the City’s Office of Sustainability, the Austin Green Business Leaders program has had more than 200 businesses download the score card to become a member. The score card is a self-assessment tool for companies to track their sustainable practices and take advantage of free City resources to support their efforts. Businesses rate themselves in seven different categories: energy efficiency, water conservation, waste diversion, use of alternative transportation, community stewardship, communications and outreach, and maintaining a healthy workplace. The City verifies these assessments and determines each business’ achievement level. To date, the program has recognized 14 businesses at the Silver level, 38 at Gold, and 51 at the Platinum level.
Businesses who achieve Silver, Gold and Platinum status are recognized at an annual awards ceremony with the Mayor, get to display the AGBL seal of achievement in their offices, and are featured on the City’s web site. In addition, these businesses become part of an active network that meets bi-monthly to exchange ideas and strategies to go green.
The program is open to companies of all sizes and types, including small, home-based businesses as well as corporate offices, restaurants, dry cleaners, grocery stores, architecture firms, florists, and high-tech companies.
By resolving to go green, local businesses can help protect the environment, save money, and make Austin a more livable place – because green business is good business. Resolve to go green and help us get to 200 members by enrolling online in the Austin Green Business Leaders program.
