Rethink/ Your Home

Aug 4, 2014 - 8:35 am

Ready to make some easy DIY improvements at home? Doing a little “green re-vamping” around the house will help you save money, make your home healthier, and protect the environment.
The City of Austin offers many great resources for residents who want to live more sustainably inside and out. From AC tune-ups to free composting classes, there’s no limit to just how green your home can be!

  1. De-clutter with Recycled Reads. Don’t dump those unwanted books, records, tapes, and DVDs in the trash – take them to Recycled Reads instead! And rather than buying new, check out vintage shops, yard sales, and consignment stores instead.

  2. Is your garage full of half-empty paint buckets and used cleaning products? Throwing these items in your garbage is harmful to both people and the environment – take them to the City of Austin’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility instead. And if you’re ready to paint a couple image of a neighborhood and homes of rooms at home, you can pick up gallons of free Re-Blend paint while you’re there.

  3. Rethink how much water you use. The City can help by providing free showerheads and faucet aerators to help you conserve more. Visit http://austintexas.gov/department/simple-ways-save-water to learn more.

  4. Weatherizing your home to save energy doesn’t have to cost money. To find out if you qualify for home weatherization services from Austin Energy click here.

  5. Do you have a swimming pool? Learn about the best ways to maintain your pool sustainably and save water, energy and money!

  6. Go local! Native plants are naturally drought tolerant and resistant to pests and disease. Click here for a local native plant guide to help you get started.

  7. How about a diet that encourages you to gain 5 pounds? Join Austin Resource Recovery’s Recycling challenge Give Us 5 and increase your household recycling by placing recycling containers in each room in your house. You’ll be surprised at how fast they fill up!

  8. Food can be a big part of household waste, but it doesn’t have to go in the trash! The City of Austin offers free composting classes and rebates toward a home composting system.

  9. Interested in saving energy? Join the Power Partner Thermostat program and control temperatures in your home from anywhere. Not only will you save energy, you’ll also receive an $85 rebate from Austin Energy. What’s not to love?

  10. Leave the car at home this weekend. Plan your afternoon around public transportation, use the bike share program, or your own two feet! View bike maps and resources here.

Be a good example to your family and your neighbors by going Green this summer!
