Teen Programs
The Austin Parks and Recreation Deparment offers a wide variety of
programs for teenagers 13-18 years of age. Many traditional recreation
programs are held at our 20 Recreation Centers, the
Dougherty Arts Center and the
Austin Nature and Science Center.
The Department has designed several award winning specialized
programs to involve teens. These programs include
Totally Cool, Totally Art, the
Neighborhood Teen Program, the Department
Bike Team and more.
The Austin Parks and Recreation Department uses a professional, systematic and studied approach in determining the programs and services we offer our community. This strategy is reflected in our Recreational, Environmental, and Cultural Program Principles. These principles are used in determining programs and services.
Local Standards of Care for the Parks and
Recreation Depaitment children's recreational programs under Texas Human Resources Code Section 42.04 l(b)(14) (Required License and Accreditation) and its home rule authority.
- Programs at the Recreation Centers include arts, dance,
boxing, wrestling, karate, team sport leagues, teen camps and
much more. Although, the individual class listing is currently
not available on the web, call the
Recreation Center closest to your home or work for information.
- The
Dougherty Arts Center offers specialty art programs for teens through the
Totally Cool Totally Art Program.
- The George Washington
Carver Museum and Cultural Center offers "A smile on My Face"
program which is a series of 35mm photography and darkroom workshops
for students 11-19.
- The Austin Nature and Science Center offers a wide variety of
programs including elementary school field trips, high adventure
activities, and camps. Come explore the environment with hands-on
exhibits, interactive nature and science trails and live Texas
wildlife!
- In addition, the Department offers speciality programs
such as:

Totally Cool, Totally Art for grades 7-12 that introduces
participants to various art mediums. Classes are held at 14
Recreation Centers.
- Neighborhood Teen Program for grades 6-12
and organized teen "club" program that introduces teens to art events,
celebrations, college experiences and more.
- Bike Team is a mountain bike team of
youth that practice and compete in area tournaments.
- National Junior Tennis League Programs
- Junior Golf Programs
- Swim Lessons and Swim Teams
- To help offer team sport and cheerleading programs to as
many children as possible the Department supports many youth
sports organization throughout the city that offer, baseball,
softball, football, soccer, cheerleading and kickball programs.
