Smart Trips Austin is an active transportation encouragement program that aims to improve health and manage congestion by increasing walking, biking and public transit use to access work sites, schools, recreation, shopping and medical facilities. The Active Transportation Program wants to make sure Austinites are aware of all of the sustainable and active options they have for getting around town.
Households are be mailed a newsletter introducing them to the program and alerting them that they will soon receive an order form in the mail with options for receiving active transportation resources including maps, safety tips and incentive prizes such as bike lights. Households may also see an invitation on their social media feeds and be directed to an online form to request resources. An Options Team member travels by bike, bus or carpool to households with the requested information packaged in a Smart Trips Austin tote bag. The tote bag also includes information about the dates, times and locations of several community-based bicycling, walking and transit programs such as learn to ride classes, transit instruction and group walking activities. Travel choices are measured before and after implementation to evaluate program effectiveness.
