Sidewalk and Urban Trail Code Updates are Underway!
City staff are currently pursuing a number of updates to city code to strengthen the City’s ability to require construction of sidewalks and urban trails with new development and to better maintain the existing sidewalk network. These code changes were identified as top priorities in the Sidewalk Master Plan and ADA Transition Plan Update, which was adopted by Austin City Council in June 2016. Because these recommendations have been conceptually reviewed and approved by Council, the code updates are being pursued by staff ahead of the CodeNEXT process in order to expedite their incorporation into city code.
The revised code language will help improve Austin’s network of sidewalks and urban trails by:
Ensuring that new development constructs new sidewalks/urban trails and does not create new gaps in the existing network;
Requiring developers to upgrade existing non-compliant sidewalks during property development;
Reducing vegetative obstructions by clarifying the responsibility of property owners for maintenance of trees and vegetation above or adjacent to sidewalks; and,
Clarifying property owners responsibilities for installation, repair and maintenance of driveway approaches.
