The following is a summary of the Hiring Process for EMS Medic I - Communications.
1. Application Information:
The Job Application Posting will be active when hiring process dates have been posted.
Applications for EMS Medic I - Communications will be accepted online through the City of Austin eCareer job site. Applications will be accepted for a minimum of thirty (30) calendar days. Applications will only be accepted online. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Please read all available information about our hiring process and eligibility on this website.
2. Minimum Qualifications:
To take the Written Entrance Exam, each applicant must meet the following minimum qualifications on or before the application deadline date:
A. Make a proper and timely application, including all required eligibility verification documentation, on a form provided by the Department;
B. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age;
C. Must be able to read and write English;
D. Have a High School Diploma or GED;
E. Have a Texas Class "C" Driver's License, or equivalent;
F. Have a current Texas Department of State Health Services certification as an Emergency Medical Technician, Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate, Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic or Licensed Paramedic; or be eligible for Texas Department of State Health Services out of state reciprocity at one of the four listed certification/license levels, at the time of application. You must be state certified at the EMT-Basic level or higher to qualify for employment.
3. Licenses, Certifications and Required Documents:
In order to be considered for the position of EMS Medic I - Communications applicants will need to submit the following required documents on or before the Application Period deadline date. Instructions for submitting the following required documents are listed on the EMS Medic I – Communications Job Application in the “Notes to Applicants” section.
Have a Texas Class "C" Driver's License, or equivalent. You can bring this as your form of identification for the test. We will need to see your identification again at each phase of the process if you are a final candidate.
Have a current Texas Department of State Health Services Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician, Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate, Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic or Licensed Paramedic: or be eligible for Texas Department of State Health Services out of state reciprocity at one of the four listed certification/license levels, at time of the application deadline. National Registry alone does NOT qualify. A copy of your certification or license is due on or before the application deadline date.
Military DD-214 with an honorable discharge status- a copy of this document is due on or before the application period deadline date if you were enlisted or served in any US Military Branch, regardless the amount of time.
Certified copy of your current Driving Record (obtained within the last 30 days) for the last 10 years or from the date you were originally licensed. If you lived in multiple states within the past ten (10) years you will need to provide documentation from each state of residence. This is a required document due on or before the application period deadline date. If you live in Texas you will be required to submit a Type AR (Abstract) driving record.
If you have submitted a copy of your past out-of-state records with in this last year (2013) you may not have to resubmit them, contact recruiting to verify that they have your records.
Eligible to Test:
All elements are PASS/FAIL.
4. Computerized Multitasking Exercise:
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be allowed to sit for the Computerized Multitasking Exercise. This assessment is a computer-based test on decision making skills, multi-tasking abilities, language arts skills, and the ability to listen and understand information. This test also assess your data entry and typing skills. There are 10 modules and candidates will be required to pass all modules in order to move forward in the hiring process.
5. Personal Statement
Candidates who are eligible to participate in the hiring process will be required to fill out a Personal Statement as soon possible, no later than the scheduled Structured Oral Interview. The Personal Statement will require details regarding past and current employment, education history, criminal history, professional references etc.
6. Structured Oral Interview (SOI) Board
Successfully complete a Structured Oral Interview (SOI) designed to assess the skills and abilities necessary to perform as an EMS Medic I – Communications. A SOI Candidate Orientation & Preparation Guide has been created to assist in the interview phase of the hiring process.
7. Military Points:
Applicants who qualify for Military points will have 5 bonus points added to their composite test score from the Structured Oral Interview Board. To qualify for military points, a candidate must have been Honorably Discharged and submitted a DD-214 by the application deadline date. No other discharge status will be accepted.
**Candidates who are participating in the process are instructed to submit their DD-214 document by the application deadline date. If an applicant did not follow these directions and submit this by the deadline date they will not receive the 5 bonus points.
8. Additional Hiring Process Elements:
ALL of the following elements are PASS/FAIL:
o Pass a typing test with 35wpm and an 80% accuracy rate.
o Employment verification for the past 10 years
o Employer Reference checks
o Criminal History Report
Drug Test (pre-employment)
Psychological Assessment and Psychologist Interview
Psychological Assessment: Applicants will complete a series of written questionnaires designed to measure a variety of personality traits and psychological/behavioral history variables associated with an ability to perform well within public safety and emergency medical service careers. The results of these questionnaires will be scored, reviewed, and used by the psychologist to inform and guide the applicant’s personal interview.
Psychologist Interview: The staff psychologist will interpret the written psychological questionnaires and use this information as well as other information learned about the applicant during the hiring process as a basis for the interview. The interview is designed to assess the applicant’s psychological and behavioral fitness to function successfully as an EMS Medic I- Communications with the Austin- Travis County Emergency Medical Services Department.
Pass a physical examination to assess the applicant's medical condition to ensure he/she can function safely as an EMS Medic I - Communications with the EMS Department.
**Candidates must pass all components of the Hiring Process in order to be considered for placement on the Final Ranked Eligibility List.
9. Final Ranked Eligibility List
The final product of the Hiring Process is a Final Ranked Eligibility List. Candidates will be hired in rank order from the Final Ranked Eligibility List. The list is valid for 24 months from the date the Final Ranked Eligibility is posted on the ATCEMS website.
