Recognized as one of the essential contributors to Austin’s rich, diverse, and unparalleled culture, the East Twelfth Street District is nested in East Austin between Comal Street and Chestnut Street. The District is home to a number of services including restaurants, bars, religious institutions, retail shops, convenience stores, beauty parlors, barbershops, among others. The district is located within the African American Cultural Heritage District, Austin’s Black Cultural District, and it contributes significantly to East Austin’s well-known history.
The East Twelfth Street Merchants Association (ETSMA) officially formed in 2017 after collaborating with Souly Austin since 2015. The merchants association has adopted its bylaws and elected its Board of Directors and officers, which include district merchants and community members. The merchants association, which has a high participation rate from merchants within the district, solidified the district’s boundaries and has begun the process of leading positive changes in the district.
