Recognized as one of the essential contributors to Austin’s rich, diverse, and unparalleled culture, the E. 12th Street District is nested in East Austin between I-35 and Airport Blvd. The District is home to a number of services including restaurants, bars, religious institutions, convenience stores, beauty parlors, barbershops, among others. The district is located within Six Square, Austin’s Black Cultural District, and it contributes significantly to East Austin’s well-known history. For more information on Six Square visit: http://sixsquare.org/.
For almost two years, the East 12th Street merchants have been collaborating with Soul-y Austin in the development of their merchants association. In September 2016, the East 12th Street merchants, Soul-y Austin, and additional supporting organizations assisted in the development and execution of the first annual district festival, Return and Discover East 12th Street. An afternoon full of music and family-friendly activities attracted large crowds which led to record sales by a number of businesses along the corridor.
Since Return and Discover, a steering committee has been meeting frequently to solidify the group’s mission, vision, and goals. The steering committee includes Full Circle Bar, House of Elegance, East Austin Advocates, Shaw’s Garage, Dozen Street, and Mission Possible Austin. With assistance of Soul-y Austin, the East 12th Street District is expected to have an established, formalized merchants association within the next few months.
