City invites public to attend, provide input at three events this week
Austinites are invited to a “Vision + Design Intensive” with three public-input sessions this month and a Speak Up Austin forum about future redevelopment of the South Central Waterfront area of Lady Bird Lake.
The South Central Waterfront is comprised of commercial, office, multi-family and restaurant uses, and is rapidly changing. In an effort to create a public realm that supports a lively, attractive pedestrian environment and enhances connections to the waterfront, the City of Austin is engaging residents, property owners, and architects and designers from Austin and around the U.S. to create a plan to guide redevelopment of the area over the next 20 years.
- Thursday, April 24, 7 to 9 p.m. Vision Workshop. Participants will provide input on emerging principles and ideas. A team of architects, designers, economists and engineers will use this feedback to conceptualize ideas.
- Saturday, April 26, 2 to 5 p.m. - Open Studio. Bring the kids! Participants can view in-process sketches, drawings and illustrations based on input from the April 24th workshop. Live music and light refreshments will be provided.
- Monday, April 28, 7 to 9 p.m. – Review Forum. The design team will unveil a conceptual plan to guide how the area redevelops.
The Vision + Design Intensive will be held at the Texas School for the Deaf, 1102 S. Congress Ave. Access the events through the main entrance on South Congress Ave.

About the South Central Waterfront Initiative
In August 2013, the City Council authorized the new South Central Waterfront Plan Initiative to establish a vision and cohesive set of recommendations to guide public and private development over the next 20-plus years.
The project area encompasses 97 acres and is bounded by South First Street on the west, Blunn Creek to the east, Lady Bird Lake on the north, and East Riverside Drive and East Bouldin Creek on the south.
This vision will include strategies to coordinate public and private investments, create economic development recommendations, integrate landscaping for beauty and environmental benefit, and achieve affordable housing.
