Tenant Applications are due no later than midnight on November 25, 2018
The City of Austin’s Imagine Austin implementation team, part of the Planning and Zoning Department, alongside the Public Works, Development Services, and Economic Development departments is seeking tenants for an upcoming temporary neighborhood center installation that will activate vacant city-owned property. The Box Bazaar: Manor Road project aims to advance citywide goals for complete communities, economic opportunity and equity by providing six affordable commercial spaces to small, local businesses. These spaces will be created from retrofitted shipping containers, which will be leased out to enthusiastic and creative entrepreneurs willing to test out new ideas or expand their business idea for a period of six months from mid-January 2019 to mid-July 2019. All tenant applications will be reviewed by City staff and a community selection committee. All finalists will receive business coaching and educational resources from the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
Tenant applications are due no later than midnight on Sunday, November 25.
The other parallel goal of the Box Bazaar project is to activate city-owned land and create a vibrant neighborhood center. The City of Austin will sponsor a variety of programming and events onsite to further activate the space. Events may include live music, movie nights, health screenings, cooking demonstrations, and dance or exercise classes. The site will be open to the public during regular hours of operation. Public restrooms will be available. The City is seeking participation for the ongoing programming of the space. Interested parties are encouraged to complete an interest survey, open through November 25, and sign-up to the mailing list to receive the latest news and information about the project.
There are three upcoming community meetings during which City staff will share information about the project, provide opportunities for input from the community, and take questions. Those meetings will be:
Box Bazaar Community Meeting #1
Date: Monday, November 5
Time: 6:30pm to 8pm
Location: Willie Mae Kirk Branch Library, 3101 Oak Springs Drive
Box Bazaar Community Meeting #2
Date: Thursday, November 8
Time: 6:30pm to 8pm
Location: St James Missionary Baptist Church, 3417 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd
Box Bazaar Community Meeting #3
Date: Tuesday, November 13
Time: 6:30pm to 8pm
Location: Given Recreation Center, 3811 E. 12th Street
All tenant applications will be initially reviewed by City staff based on the following criteria:
Connection to the local community
Strength of business idea
Viability of business model
Availability of tenants
Experience and ability to operate a business
The remaining applications will then be reviewed by a community selection committee composed of key stakeholders, community leaders, and City staff with experience in equity, small business, and economic development. The final candidates will be asked to pitch their business idea in-person during an interview with the selection committee. Finalists will be notified by the end of December 2018 and the Box Bazaar site is scheduled to open in mid-January 2019. Additional information regarding tenant responsibilities including rent, the workspace, tenant selection criteria, and the tenant selection process see the Box Bazaar Tenant Information Sheet.
