AUSTIN, Texas – Passengers now have the opportunity to help make air travel more sustainable by purchasing carbon offsets at an affordable price. Through The Good Traveler Program, $2 purchases carbon offsets for 1,000 miles of flying. Air travelers may select what projects their contribution funds with options ranging from wind farms to forestry.
“Austin’s airport has worked to minimize its environmental impact starting with its construction in the 1990s. Now our travelers have the opportunity to personally make air travel more sustainable,” said Jim Smith, Executive Director, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
To be part of The Good Traveler Program, travelers can simply go to the Austin airport website, www.abia.org, and click on The Good Traveler icon, or go directly to www.thegoodtraveler.org.
For $2, a certified carbon offset can be purchased that funds a wind farm and forestry project offsetting 344 lbs. of CO2e, plus a Colorado Delta Restoration project that restores 100 gallons of water, or choose offsets that reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation in the Congo & Zambia.
The Good Traveler Program was launched a year ago by San Diego International Airport. Austin’s airport is among the first to pilot the expansion of the program. Now entering its second year, the participants in the Good Traveler program has offset 9,779,232 air miles or 1,770 metric tons of carbon dioxide, and helped to put 877,894 gallons of water back into the Colorado Delta.
“The Good Traveler Program works because it is simple, affordable and meaningful,” said Thella F. Bowens, President/CEO of San Diego International Airport. “It’s very gratifying to see it expand nationally, and we are thrilled to welcome Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to The Good Traveler family.”
