In March 2019, APD Officers Jacob Troy and Travis Cornelius responded to a check welfare call about a man threatening suicide. Upon arrival at the residence, Officers Troy and Cornelius attempted to make contact, but the man did not respond. Officers Troy and Cornelius kicked in the door where they observed blood covering the floor. They quickly located the man with significant injuries and applied a tourniquet to stop the blood loss. Austin-Travis County EMS arrived and transported the man to Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas where he was rushed into surgery. Michael Morgan, a medic, later wrote,
“The injuries to that patient were life-threatening and the officers’ rapid access to the patient and quick application of a tourniquet absolutely helped save his life.”
For their keen actions, Officers Troy and Cornelius will be honored with a life-saving award at this year’s APD Awards Gala. They are pictured below at the Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas in October 2019.
