Beginning on Sunday, May 6, 2018, the State of Texas will honor the 18 Texas peace officers who died in the line of duty in 2017 and 48 others who were discovered through research during several Texas Peace Officers’ Memorial Events throughout the week.
Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. – There will be a candlelight vigil on the north side of the Capitol in front of the Texas Peace Officers’ Memorial where 66 names will be read and inducted on to the Memorial wall. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will be the keynote speaker.
Monday, May 7, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. – The Memorial will begin with a procession up Congress Avenue starting from the Congress Avenue Bridge. The cortege will include Honor Guards, combined pipe and drum corps, motorcycles, bicycles and mounted units from across the state. The line will move to the south steps of the Capitol where the service, which will include a riderless horse, taps, rifle volley and a flyover, will begin at approximately 11 a.m. Texas Governor Greg Abbott will be the keynote speaker.
Friday, May 11, 2018 at 8 p.m. – The Austin Police Department will gather on the north side of the Capitol in front of the Texas Peace Officers’ Memorial to honor the 23 Austin Police Officers who have been killed in the line of duty. Chief Brian Manley will be the keynote speaker.
