Archives Clinic Offers Preservation Tips for Battered Treasures
Austin, TX — Cherished photographs stuck together? Trying to salvage Grandparent’s old love letters from WWII or precious video of your baby’s first steps? Stop by the annual Archives Clinic at the Austin History Center on Saturday, October 20th, 2007 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. to learn how to make your memories last for lifetimes.
The public is invited to bring in their special materials and get advice on topics ranging from organization to preservation of papers, photographs, scrapbooks, home movies, video, audio recordings, electronic records, and other documents. Students and faculty from the University of Texas School of Information, along with staff archivists from the Austin History Center,
will be on hand to assess your materials and tell you what it takes to preserve them. Free literature will also be available.
This free preservation workshop is part of Archives Week, sponsored by University of Texas student chapter of the Society of American Archivists and the Austin History Center.
"Almost everyone has a favorite photograph that has some kind of damage or has faded because it was not stored properly," said Sue Soy, manager of the Austin History Center. "Most of us don’t think much about how important preservation is until a document that is important to us is damaged and needs to be restored or preserved. We are pleased to be working with UT’s student archivists. These students are dedicated to documenting and preserving history because they know that preserving archives is a central component to protecting our community’s legal rights, cultural heritage and collective memory."
