The goal is to reduce recidivism, increase economic opportunity, and promote reintegration for individuals with criminal records.
This effort is led by the Office of Civil Rights, now part of the Office of Equity and Inclusion, which enforces civil rights protections and conducts outreach, training, and investigations related to employment discrimination, housing, and access to public services.

- Complete all required and optional fields accurately. When responding to open-ended questions, provide clear and thorough answers.
- You can click “Save to continue” at the bottom of the application at any time. Note: If you leave a page and return without saving, your progress on that page may be lost.
- Important Tip! Avoid losing your work—save often.
Applications that take longer to complete may be affected by system timeouts due to inactivity. To protect your progress:
• Save your application frequently as you work
• Prepare longer responses (such as work history or supplemental questions) in a separate document and paste them into the application
• Avoid leaving the application idle for extended periods
Taking these steps will help ensure your information is not lost and your application can be submitted successfully.
- Important Tip! Avoid losing your work—save often.
- Carefully review and acknowledge all required sections before proceeding.
- Once you've completed your application, a summary page titled “Review” will appear. Take time to assess your responses. Use the “Back” button to make any necessary updates.

- Review document requirements carefully. Some positions may require a résumé and cover letter. Any required documents should be uploaded in the “Resume/CV” drag-and-drop area of the application.

- Supervisor and employment verification details may be required. Be ready to provide accurate contact information for previous supervisors or employers to support reference checks and employment verification.

Core information provided—such as your work history, education, and responses to application questions—is reviewed by recruiters, HR staff, hiring authorities, panel interviewers, and senior leadership. These materials are a key part of every stage of the evaluation process, including offer development. Submitting a thorough and accurate application helps support your candidacy from start to finish.

Make sure the file is not password-protected, encrypted, corrupted, or unusually large.
Try saving the document with a simple file name that does not contain special characters.
Close and reopen your browser, then sign back into your candidate account and try again.
Try using a different supported web browser or another computer or device.
If you are copying or parsing information from your résumé, review the information carefully before continuing to make sure it transferred correctly.
Check the entire application for required document uploads. Some positions may require documents at the beginning of the application, while others may include additional required uploads within the supplemental questions.

How can I avoid losing my work while completing a City of Austin application?
City of Austin applications are completed through Workday. If you are completing a lengthy application, it is a good practice to save your progress frequently and avoid leaving an application open and inactive for an extended period. To help protect your work:Save and advance through your application regularly. Workday saves application information as you progress through the application, including when you select Next to move through application sections.
As a general precaution, we recommend that you do not work for more than approximately 30 minutes without saving or advancing your application, particularly when entering lengthy information.
If you are creating information from scratch, consider drafting and saving longer information in a separate document, such as Microsoft Word, and then copying it into the application. This is especially helpful for detailed employment history or supplemental-question responses.
If you need additional time to gather information or documents, save your progress and return to the application rather than leaving the application open for an extended period.
If this is your first time applying through the City of Austin’s Workday candidate site, keep a record of the email address and password used to create your account. You will need this information to return to your candidate account.
Your Candidate Home allows you to return to draft applications, review submitted applications, monitor application activity, and withdraw an application when appropriate.
Before beginning, consider gathering your employment history, education information, résumé, certifications, and other required documents so they are readily available.
Important: A saved or draft application has not necessarily been submitted. You must complete the application and submit it before the position’s application deadline to be considered.
Here’s a simplified fake resume (in Google Docs) designed to parse cleanly into Workday or any Applicant Tracking System (ATS). It uses a clean layout, no tables or graphics, and a chronological format—all best practices for system readability. Here are links to two versions in Microsoft Word:
