Environmental Health Programs

The City of Austin Environmental Health Program provides inspection, regulatory, educational and permitting services for a variety of activities including:

  • Annual inspection, permitting and complaint investigation of over 1,500 public and semi-public swimming pools and spas.
  • Enforcement and public awareness of Austin’s Smoking in Public Places Ordinance (SIPPO).
  • Conduct educational activities regarding the harmful effects of smoking and tobacco use.
  • Complaint investigation and enforcement of the City's animal pen ordinance pertaining to odor and set back requirements.
  • Water quality sampling and monitoring of public “swimming holes” (water contact recreation areas) such as Barton Springs, McKinney Falls State Park, and Bull Creek.
  • Investigation of general Public Health Nuisances.
