The Rodent & Vector Program provides public health services to the citizens of Austin-Travis County in two vital areas.
The Rodent component involves activities related to the control of commensal rodents. These animals are not only responsible for substantial property damage; they may also transmit several diseases of public health concern including Murine typhus, plague, salmonellosis, trichinosis, leptospirosis, and rat-bite fever. Program staff is limited to only assisting individual residential property owners. Contact the Program rodent information line at (512) 972-5692 or e-mail to ECHU.service@ci.austin.tx.us.
Tenants experiencing rodent problems in multi-family/commercial rental property are advised to contact either the Austin Tenant’s Council or Solid Waste Services/Code Enforcement. Landlords are obligated to maintain their rentals to the minimum standards set by the Uniform Housing Code and the Dangerous Building Code. Examples of violations include heating problems, plumbing problems, and electrical problems, lack of weather protection, structural hazards, and rodent infestations. Report suspected violations to 3-1-1 or file a complaint online.
The Vector component helps to control mosquito population levels, thereby reducing or preventing outbreaks of several mosquito-borne diseases of concern in Texas including encephalitis, West Nile virus, dengue fever, and dog heartworm. Effective mosquito control serves to enhance the enjoyment of outdoor activities by all citizens of the community. Contact the Program vector information line at
(512) 972-5692 or e-mail to ECHU.service@ci.austin.tx.us.
Program staff also responds to bee and stinging insect complaints. Although personnel are not licensed to exterminate, remove, or relocate bees and stinging insects, they can offer assistance by providing information/education, and if requested, a referral list with contact information for several local area beekeepers and the Capitol Area Honey Bee Stewards. (512) 972-5690 or ECHU.service@ci.austin.tx.us.
