Food Handler registration is required for employees that meet the following definition:
A Food Enterprise employee who works with unpackaged food, food equipment, food utensils, or food contact surfaces.
Food Handlers will have to register every two years.
Establishment Food Handler Phase-in Compliance Schedule
- March 31, 2009: 25% of Food Handlers to be registered
- June 30, 2009: 50% of Food Handlers to be registered
- September 30, 2009: 75% of Food Handlers to be registered
- December 31, 2009: the remainder to be registered
Beginning February 2009 Food Enterprise permit renewal notices will require that Food Operators provide a list of all Food Handlers and shall indicate which Food Handlers are registered with Austin by including their registration number.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Any Food Enterprise that scores below 70 or has their permit suspended will be required to have all of their Food Handlers obtain training and become registered within 30 days of the inspection.

The following food employees will not be required to become a Registered Food Handler:

A Food Enterprise employee with a valid Food Manager Certificate issued from the City of Austin
-
A Food Enterprise employee working in unincorporated areas of Travis County.
There are two options for becoming a Registered Food Handler in Austin, Texas.
Option A
Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department has
contracted with vendors to offer Food Handler Training for Food
Enterprise employees in the City of Austin.

Food Handler Training programs approved by the Texas Department of
State Health Services are accepted by ATCHHSD.
To be
registered with ATCHHSD, you must submit proof of this training along
with a City of Austin Food Handlers Reciprocity Registration
Application, ( English or Spanish ), a
government issued photo ID and $10 to:
