Food Manager Certification Program

Food Manager Certification is recognition that an individual has received certification in the safe preparation and storage of food to prevent food-borne illnesses. The City of Austin requires at least one individual in each food establishment to have a City of Austin issued Food Manager Certificate. Please see Austin City Food Code 10-3-31 for exceptions.  We offer both on-line and classroom Certification in English and Spanish.

On-line Certification Prep and Exam

  • English and Spanish On-line Certification Prep and Exam registration.  Registration fee includes a certificate with the City of Austin.
Classroom Certification Prep and Exam
  • Option 1: Classroom Review and Exam (6 hours review and 2 hour, Texas Department of State Health Services exam).
  • Option 2: Exam only. No classroom review (2 hour, Texas Department of State Health Services exam).
  • You must bring a TX Drivers License or government photo ID with you to take the exam.
  • Enrolled classroom students may pick up a study guide prior to the classroom exam by bringing your enrollment receipt and ID to the 4th floor of RBJ Health Center, 15 Waller St.

Classroom Registration
  • Classroom Food Manager Certification Prep and the exam are scheduled several times a month in English and quarterly in Spanish.
  • Advance registration is required due to limited seating. Register early to receive the class you desire.
  • Registration fee includes a copy of the City of Austin Food Manager Certificate.
Classroom Registration Payment
  • Cash, check, money orders, MasterCard, Visa, and Discover Card payments accepted.
  • Make checks and money orders payable to Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department or A/TCHHSD.
  • Include a legible copy of a Drivers License or Government issued photo ID with your application.
  • Register in person or by mail at RBJ Health Center, 4th Floor, 15 Waller, Austin, TX 78702
  • Credit card payments are taken at 972-5600 after the application and photo ID have been faxed to 972-5630.
Classroom Registration Refunds

All requests for refunds or credit must be in writing. No refunds or credit are given without written notification to A/TCHHSD at least 24 hrs prior to start of class and no refunds or credit are given after 6 months from the date of payment.
CERTIFICATE OF RECIPROCITY
If you are certified through a Texas Department of State Health Services or Conference for Food Protection accredited agency other than the City of Austin you may purchase a City of Austin Food Manager Certificate of Reciprocity. UN-INCORPORATED AREAS OF TRAVIS COUNTY
Establishments located in the un-incorporated areas of Travis County are not required to have a Certified Food Manager.
