Pet Registration
What is Pet Registration?
Pet Registration is the City/County Health Departments’ way to make sure that all pets in Austin and Travis County are vaccinated against rabies as required by law and have some measure of trace-able identification.
All dogs and cats more than 4 months old MUST be registered with Town Lake Animal Center. A current rabies vaccination is required in order to register a pet. Pets that are spayed or neutered can receive a Lifetime Pet Registration for just $5.00. Pets that are intact (not spayed or neutered) must be registered every year, and the price is $20.00 per year. Pets living outside of our jurisdiction can also be registered in our database for their protection, but please check with your local City or County authorities for pet licensing requirements in your area.
Benefits of Registration
Besides being required by law, there are many benefits for your pet if he or she is wearing a current Pet Registration tag! Registered, tag-wearing pets get:
- A free ride home from Animal Protection & Control Officers
- Emergency medical treatment if found injured
- An extended stay at the shelter (at least 10 days instead of usual 3 days)
- Important contact and medical information in our database
How to Register
Register your pet at Town Lake Animal Center by bringing in your pets’ rabies vaccination record, or ask your veterinarian to include Pet Registration when s/he gives your pet its rabies vaccination. Many Austin-area veterinarians participate in our registration program.
Registration is $5 for spayed or neutered pets (lifetime), and $20 for intact pets (annually).
