All Austin firefighters receive basic training in water rescues, hazardous materials mitigation, and high-angle/confined-space rescues. However, members of AFD's specialty teams have obtained additional training and certifications. These firefighters respond to medical calls, fires, and other "routine" calls, but also are dispatched to provide their special expertise as needed. The Special Operations Section has evolved into a separate battalion (Battalion 6) within AFD Operations. Three battalion chiefs are assigned to Special Operations (one for each shift) and companies from four fire stations make up the team. Special Operations encompasses three special disciplines: Hazardous Materials Response, Search and Rescue, and Water Rescue. The Search and Rescue team responds to either confined space or high angle rescues. The Special Operations Section keeps on top of new procedures and technology, ensuring that members maintain their certification and training levels, and obtaining materials and equipment.
