OPPORTUNITIES
All firefighters participate in general emergency activities that include fire suppression, medical first response, pre-fire planning, inspections, rescue operations, public education, and station/equipment maintenance. Ongoing training is a requirement of all AFD firefighters.

Additional career opportunities exist for AFD firefighters, most of which require special training, certifications, or experience. For instance, specialty teams in Water Rescue, Technical Rescue and Hazardous Materials comprise AFD's Special Operations units.

AFD careers later may lead to arson investigation, fire inspections, communications, public education, training instruction, emergency medical instruction, or recruiting. Some of these assignments require a minimum rank that can be obtained through the AFD promotional process.

PROMOTIONS
Promotions procedures follow Texas Civil Service Law requirements. After two years of experience in a sworn rank, a firefighter may take a promotional exam for the next higher rank. After each promotional examination, a promotion eligibility list is developed, reflecting the score of each applicant who earned a passing grade. To this written exam score is added one point for each year of service, up to 12 points. When a position becomes vacant, the Fire Chief selects from the top three people on the eligibility list to fill the vacancy.
