The summer season of Austin’s Music in the Parks concert series begins with live performances by Gina Chavez and Este Vato from 1-4pm on Saturday May 19th at the Rosewood Recreation Center, 1182 N Pleasant Valley Rd.
Indie Latin-folk songstress Gina Chavez is Austin’s talented blend of folk, bluegrass and Latin music. Since launching her debut album Hanging Spoons in 2007, Gina Chavez has been featured on NPR’s AltLatino and has toured with renowned bands such as Grupo Fantasma and Del Castillo. In 2009, Gina traveled to El Salvador and helped to establish Austin 4 El Salvador, which is a college fund for El Salvadorian girls in Soyapango. Chavez has performed at SXSW and Pachanga Music Festival, and in March 2012 was named an official Music Ambassador for the City of Austin to travel and perform at the Yumeiro Festival in Oita, Japan.
Joining Gina Chavez will be Este Vato, a 7-member Latin fusion band that blends English and Spanish lyrics with cumbia, hip-hop and rock rhythms. The group’s most recent compilation The Morningside EP, was released in September 2011. Este Vato has performed at Pachanga Festival, Austin Vida showcases and is a frequent opener and headliner for Austin’s Latin music scene.
The Music in the Parks series is a year-long concert series that provides free, live and diverse concerts to Austin's music-loving community in parks citywide.
