Downtown Development InitiativesCIP 840-607-3009SummaryThe City of Austin has obtained professional assistance to ensure that all major downtown land development projects fit within a broader downtown development context. The consultant team is assisting the City staff with a program which includes the evaluation of current or future projects related to downtown development, performance of market analysis, assisting the City in developing a preliminary financing plan for a downtown revitalization zone, and developing recommendations for a downtown development corporation.StatusOn August 21, 1996 the City Council issued a formal Notice of Intent to the other taxing units in the proposed TIF district (AISD, ACC and Travis County) of its intention to establish a Reinvestment Zone for Tax Increment Financing. A public hearing is tentatively scheduled for October 24, 1996.DescriptionThe Austin City Council has identified downtown development and housing as a major priority. In addition, the City has received numerous inquiries concerning retail development in or near downtown, and is also considering other projects, including a new City Hall and downtown art museum.The city staff and downtown consultant were directed to proceed with the creation of a TIF district and development corporation by City Council resolution on June 8, 1995. A downtown development schedule was provided to the Council in November of 1995 outlining the necessary steps and timeline to implement the Councils' direction. Basic Data
