Water Conservation Code Revision Process

Update: On September 20, 2012, Austin Water held a public workshop to get input into developing rules to support provisions of the Water Conservation Code. Click here to find links to each of the proposed rules. Public comment on the proposed rules has ended and the rules are expected to be adopted in June 2013.

Austin Water held a series of four public workshops in late 2011 and early 2012 to get input on ways to revise the Water Conservation Code. On August 16, 2012, Austin City Council approved the revised Water Conservation Code, which was developed from comments received through these workshops.

CODE REVISION PROCESS PUBLIC MEETING INFORMATION

The regional drought created significant challenges for Austin Water and the residents of Austin. To better respond to the effects of long-term drought, Austin Water began a process to revise the Water Conservation Code. The goal was to balance the need to conserve our water supply and the desire to sustain our local economy and the natural surroundings unique to Austin. Austin Water encouraged the public, organizations, and businesses to take part in this process by attending workshops to discuss how the City should regulate water use in times of drought and review specific restrictions, including the watering schedule and limits on car washing.
